CCA represent one of the most significant changes we've seen in military aviation, and they'll reshape the skill set required of future aviators at every stage of their careers. When I think about CCA, I actually start at the end state and work backward. The real challenge isn't just teaching pilots how to fly alongside autonomous aircraft, it's preparing them to plan, command, and employ increasingly complex formations in combat.
If CCA is implemented as envisioned, future operations could involve dozens, if not hundreds, of autonomous aircraft operating alongside crewed platforms. That dramatically increases the complexity of mission planning, command and control, and airspace deconfliction. Those are skills that become especially important at the advanced stages of training, from mission commander and flight lead upgrades to the Air Force Weapons School, where aviators learn to integrate and employ combat capabilities at the highest level.
At the same time, autonomy has the potential to make individual pilots more effective. Rather than simply managing their own aircraft, aviators will increasingly direct teams of autonomous systems that expand their reach, sensing, and weapons capacity. That shifts the emphasis from hands-on aircraft management toward mission command, tactical decision-making, and effectively employing autonomous teammates.
More broadly, autonomy continues a trend we've seen throughout the history of aviation: making aircraft easier to fly so pilots can focus on accomplishing the mission. Modern platforms like the F-35 already automate many routine flying tasks, allowing pilots to devote more attention to battlespace awareness, information management, and weapons employment. As autonomy continues to mature, flight training will need to place even greater emphasis on decision-making, systems integration, and command skills so aviators are prepared to lead increasingly complex human-machine teams.
